I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in running or taking part in a number of conservation research projects and expeditions, from mist netting birds and macheting vines in the rainforests of Borneo, to rooting through Madagascar’s treetops to sample canopy frogs, to catching dung beetles in the Colombian Andes. Read about these and more by clicking on the images below.
Southern Ethiopian Highlands
My PhD research will investigate how forest restoration could benefit both people and wildlife in the highlands of Southwest Ethiopia. More soon!

Musandam Botanic Expedition.
In March 2019, I joined a 2 week project in the rocky mountains of northernmost Oman, working with the Oman Botanic Gardens to track the distribution of 20 rare and poorly-researched plants.

Colombian Andes: From Cowlands to Cloud Forest
In early 2019, I spent two months in the Colombian Andes on a project exploring how carbon and biodiversity recover when cattle pastures regrow back to forest.
Madagascar’s Treetops
MI spent December 2018 assisting on tree climbing project exploring how frogs and reptiles distribute themselves in the forest and what this means for how species will respond to climate change.
Borneo fieldwork
I have a long-standing interest in how we can improve the management and conservation value of heavily logged forests in Northern Borneo. Since 2015, I have spent most of my summers in Borneo, particularly around Danum Valley Conservation Area. Working inside these forests I have had some of the happiest and most formative experiences of my life. As part of my own research, I have investigated ways to speed up the recovery of logged forests by macheting vine tangles and replanting seedlings in the understorey. As part of this, I helped setup an experimental restoration project in a tract of heavily logged forest in 2018 and 2019. I have also led or been a part of projects exploring the impacts of logging on dung beetles and birds.

Tanzania
In 2014, I spent a month on expedition trekking in the Uluguru and Nguru mountains.
