Virunga

Virunga national park, situated in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo is home to half of all of the species found on the African continent. It is also one of the last remaining strongholds of the mountain gorilla, containing around 200 of the 800 or so mountain gorillas left on our planet . Slightly smaller than Yellowstone national park, Virunga’s existence and the survival of its ape inhabitants rests upon the brave work of the park rangers and officials, whose daily jobs see them striving to fend off oil and other extractive companies encroaching into the jungles. Virunga is a beautiful documentary, that shows the powerful bond between gorillas and their protectors, and demonstrates the trials and tribulations of biodiversity protection amidst political upheaval.
