Get outside and feed some cows

Bored? Go and feed some cows.

Wherever you are, chances are there are some nearby. There are around 1.5 billion of them on our planet and they’re mostly pretty friendly creatures.

These are Limousine cows, a breed of cattle from a region of France called the Limousin. So an all-round well-named cow…

The grass usually is greener on the other side so you can normally find big tufts of the stuff beyond the fence that the cows can’t quite reach. Yank a couple of handfuls out of the ground and then if you hold it out and wait patiently and quietly, soon enough dozens of cows will get curious and come and have a nose around. It can be pretty fun watching them charge over.

Ready to drop their next album

Usually cows live in pretty scenic areas, on rolling hills or slap bang in the centre of big chunks of countryside. So it can be nice to get on a bike and head out looking for them.

And if you go around sunset, the golden light can make for some great cow-feeding views. I’ve noticed that a lot of cows tend to be more curious around evening time, maybe because they’re tired after a long day lolloping around a field and chewing cud?!

Esme feeds her long lost sibling

Without a doubt my favourite cow are highland cows. I’m ashamed to admit that it’s because they’re fluffy.

But I’m also a fan of your classic black and white Holstein Friesians. There’s a big herd of these  only about a 15 minutes walk from my house.

Going out and feeding cows grass is a great way of getting into nature and can also be a very good way of practising your photography.

Here are five beautiful cow photos taken by my photographer friend Sam Kite.
