Building societies that don’t suck

We have to design systems that will incentivise pro-environmental decision-making.

It’s not enough to rely on individual choices. Individuals are busy. Individuals have kids, careers and favourite TV programmes.

And individuals are constrained by the inefficient and wasteful industrial systems through which they can meet their daily needs.

Much easier would be to fix our systems so that the effortful thinking needed to pick one form of transport over another, or to avoid a certain type of food, or even to to better manage waste are relieved.

Because it’s easier to cycle to work when there are plenty of bike paths.

It’s simpler to avoid beef when it’s not an option on the menu.

And it’s quicker to recycle when provided with recycling bins.
